Breaking Thunder captures the energy and power of an Atlantic wave at its peak.
Painted in oil on linen in 2011, Breaking Thunder reflects my continuing fascination with light, color, atmosphere, and capturing the rhythm and essence of a single moment.
Recently rediscovered while relocating and inventorying my collection, Breaking Thunder was among many paintings that had never been digitally captured, having gone into storage years before I found a reason to do so.
Researching its history uncovered surprisingly little—unusual for a painting of this scale. I found only a few photographs taken the day after it was completed and an early blog about painting the ocean at Virginia Beach, where it appeared alongside several other seascapes from that period. An AI search of the title also revealed that Breaking Thunder was featured in a full-page advertisement and as part of an editorial feature in American Art Collector in 2011.
Somehow, after all these years, Breaking Thunder quietly slipped into the background—until now.
